COLUMBUS, Ohio — After a draft of an opinion on a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade was leaked, groups on both sides of the issue now are keeping a watchful eye on the court.

What You Need To Know

  • The draft opinion was authored by conservative Justice Samuel Alito

  • The Supreme Court has not yet issued a final ruling in the case

  • As many as 26 states are expected to ban abortions if Roe v. Wade is no longer in effect

“Absolutely does lasting damage to the reputation to the United States Supreme Court justices to be blind, and free of politics,” said Michael Gonidakis, the President of Ohio Right to Life.

Ohio Right to Life is the state’s largest and longest-serving anti-abortion organization.

Gonidakis said he was stunned to learn of a leaked Supreme Court document that could hint at the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but thinks it’s a positive step forward for Ohio.

“Each state should be able to determine when life begins and how we protect and help women and how we protect and help children,” Gonidakis said. “In Ohio, the great Buckeye State, I believe we’re going to have a different outcome and we’re going to protect women, we are going to help women and we’re going to help children too and we’re going to get rid of abortion in Ohio.”

Jessie Hill, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University, said it’s really important to keep in mind that landmark cases often go through multiple revisions.

“Sometimes people change votes after a period of time, so we really don’t know for sure. But I do think it’s a pretty good sign, a pretty strong data point in terms of where the Supreme Court is going,” said Hill.

“To say this ruling is devastating is an understatement,” said Aileen Day, communications director for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio is an abortion-rights organization that operates 17 health centers across the state.

Day said abortion is health care, supported by 80% of Americans in some form and it should not be stigmatized or illegal.

She said overturning Roe v. Wade is a human rights care crisis and damages the reputation of the Supreme Court, but the fight continues.

“We have a long road ahead of us, in terms of fighting to get our rights back,” said Day. “It has taken generations to get where we’re at right now in terms of overturning Roe v Wade. And it’s going to take a long fight to get it back, but we’re in this fight and we can only do it if we work together.”

The Supreme Court has not yet issued a final ruling in the case. That could come in June.

Planned Parenthood said supporters will rally in Cleveland and Cincinnati on May 14.
