ELYRIA, Ohio– Most people would agree that children need a good night’s rest to do well in school.
Volunteers in Lorain County are working with a national organization to make sure that kids in need have a comfortable place to sleep at night.
- More than 400 beds are still in demand
- Community working together
- The beds that were built will be delivered to families in February
Roger Lee Dorsey is on a mission to build beds for kids in need.
“Just here in Lorain County, we started 18 months ago, and we’ve received over 1,200-bed requests for kids that don’t have adequate sleeping arrangements. We delivered 750 beds, but that still leaves us, 400 kids, that are sleeping on the floor that we know of,” Says Roger Lee Dorsey, Lorain County Chapter President of “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.”
Over the weekend, members of the community came out to build beds that will later be assembled in people’s homes.
Elyria Mayor Frank Whitfield is supportive of the project.
“The answers to our problems are already in our community, and if we can inspire people to serve and help one another then there’s no problem we can’t tackle, and this is a testament of that, of people coming out and helping in their community,” says Elyria Mayor Frank Whitfield
Roger Lee Dorsey knows all too well what it’s like to sleep on the floor, so he’s giving back the only way he knows how.
“When I was between ages 11 & 15, I was one of these kids that sleep on the floor, so I know what they are going through. Trying to sleep on the floor, or a pile of clothes and then go to school the next day, so it resonates with me. I know what the problem is, and we are going to build beds until no kid sleeps on the floor in Lorain County.” Says Dorsey.
