COLUMBUS, Ohio — “We Got Game” coach Kyle Davis is introducing kids to the benefits of physical fitness.
- He creates a relationship and trust that has helped young minds develop sports knowledge and skills
- It’s a job and responsibility he doesn’t take for granted
- He hopes the skills the kids learn will have a positive impact for years to come
He started the Columbus branch in 2016 after several years of teaching. He comes from a family of educators, with his parents even running a daycare.
On this day he’s at the Barrington School in Powell with a group he knows well.
“Several of the kids were in the infant room when I started here, which is pretty cool because we don’t get them until they’re young toddlers and now they’re in pre-kindergarten,” said Coach Kyle. “I’ve seen them go from not even being able to walk to doing some of our drills and games that are a little more advanced and even for pre-k, once they’ve been with us for 3 or 4 years, they’re usually pretty in-tune with what we’re doing.”
And what they’re doing takes a special kind of coach.
“Well, Kyle is very patient with the children and is a big kid at heart,” said Shannon Davis, Barrington School center director. “He knows how to engage with the children and the children are always excited to see him when he comes in... they’re always eager to follow those directions from him…and his big loud voice…and he always makes them want to come in and join the fun.”
It’s a job and responsibility Coach Kyle doesn’t take for granted.
“It gives you goosebumps when you walk into a room and you haven’t been there in 3 months and the kids remember your name and they’re so happy to see you,” said Coach Kyle.
It’s about creating a relationship and trust that has helped these young minds develop sports knowledge and skills.
“All the terminology they’ve absorbed from us and skills they’ve learned as I’ve gotten to see them grow, it’s definitely the most gratifying part of the job,” said Coach Kyle.
Coach Kyle hopes these skills will have a positive impact for years to come.
“Instilling the enjoyment of fitness into kids even at the preschool level and all the way through high school gives kids a sense of fulfillment that they can carry on through their adult lives and help them lead a healthy lifestyle," he said.
