U.S. Senator Charles Schumer was in Buffalo Monday to support the city's application for a $25 million federal grant.

  • Money will fund program to reopen parts of Main St. to vehicles
  • This is the third of three grants for the project
  • If approved construction could take up to three years to complete

The funds would help complete Buffalo's "Cars on Main" program to further open vehicle traffic from downtown to the waterfront.

The city has already received about $33 million from two other grants in the past.

Schumer says he's hopeful Buffalo will get the third based on M&T Bank's recent announcement of more than 1,000 tech jobs to Seneca One Tower.

"Buffalo is growing, attracting younger people, both who've never lived in Buffalo and who once lived in Buffalo coming back here. This should help cement that," said Sen. Schumer, D-NY.

The city is expected to hear whether it's been awarded the grant within three to six months.
