PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — It's been loud over the Brevard County skies for the past few days — the roar of fighter jet engines has taken over.

  • F-15s, F-16s and C-130s are conducting training
  • They'll be at Patrick Air Force Base the next few weeks
  • Cold weather makes it hard to train in Midwest, Northeast

Patrick Air Force Base is in the midst of hosting aircraft training missions for visiting pilots logging required flight time.

Dozens of F-15s and F-16s from the Air Force's 180th Fighter Wing in Ohio and 104th Fighter Wing from Massachusetts are soaring over the Space Coast.

The latest winter blast gripping most of the nation has made it tough to conduct these trainings at home.

"It's -40 degrees in Ohio right now, so we try to find locations, usually in the south," said Senior Master Sgt. Beth Holliker of the 180th Fighter Wing.

"(It's) enjoyable to watch them come and go," said Dave Hilliard, who lives right next to Patrick.

Hilliard, like many others, have lined the Pineda Causeway and packed the public beach accesses on base to see the amazing aircraft. He said it's obvious when the powerful jets pass overhead.

"(There's a) little bit of rumbling here and there, (and) the dogs look up every time," Hilliard quipped.

"We call it the 'sound of freedom,' so it's a favorite sound for us, so we hope the communities around here are enjoying it," Holliker said.

The pilots are taking off in the morning and afternoons. You can expect the roar of jets until February 9.
