WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- One local nonprofit is set-up just like a furnitrue showroom, and for the volunteers that make it so special, that's exactly the point.

Four-year veteran volunteer Susan Valauri says the magic you see out front actually starts in the back. Like an assembly line, volunteers at The Green Chair Project in Raleigh are making sure clients recovering from crisis can enjoy the comforts of home.

"We have furnished over 2,000 households by taking in furnishing donations from the community and placing them into those households to help them live more sustainably," said Executive Director, Jackie Craig.

Everything from art, to pots and pans, are part of the package deal.

"Clients have a once-in-a-lifetime shopping experience to be able to come and choose what they need for their home in a beautiful furnishing showroom, surrounded with lots of dignity," Craig said. "There's a sense of ownership because they do pay a small fee for the furniture they receive."

It's an 'Everyday Hero' who's there to support families during their visit, standing by their side as they shop.

"To actually serve a client, connect with somebody who is having this wonderful experience of being able to personally select furnishings for their home, and then make personal touches like art, mirrors, rugs, or kitchen appliances," Valauri said. "They're so excited about that."

Something like furniture may seem so simple to some, but Valauri knows first-hand, it's something much more. It's a symbol of overcoming adversity, for making it home, once again.

"The gratifying part about all of this is we are able to take a house and turn it into a home for them," Valauri said.
