CINCINNATI, Ohio — One Cincinnati Councilmember, Evan Nolan, is offering assistance to people facing eviction, financially and with his own time, according to a press release from his office.

What You Need To Know

  • Cincinnati Councilmember Evan Nolan is working to assist tenants facing eviction

  • He has pledged money from his excess office budget and will be offering counsel

  • He will be trying to bring other local attorneys in to do the same

He is doing this in partnership with the United Way of Greater Cincinnati and the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Help Center.

Nolan has had experience as a real estate attorney, the release states, and he will be offering counsel to these tenants, and he is working to bring other local attorneys in to do the same.

Additionally, he is pledging $10,000 from his excess office budget, directing that money toward “rental assistance and access to counsel.”

“Less than 5% of tenants have representation in court, and evictions continued to rise following the pandemic. The City has invested significant resources into rental assistance and limited representation, and I feel it is my duty to further support and promote these efforts however I can," Nolan said in the release. "My experience as an attorney and passion for keeping people in their homes made it a perfect opportunity.”

The release highlights the effectiveness of eviction prevention efforts "through this workstream," noting that they have helped more than 60 families each month. They said 90% of those cases had a positive outcome.

“This includes everything from reaching a mutual agreement to court dismissal,” the release reads. “Most importantly, these individuals and families avoid having an eviction following them on their record.”
