OHIO — Today's weak clipper system is on its way out, taking the precipitation with it.
Only a few leftover rain and/or snow showers will be around this evening. The one exception to that will be northeastern Ohio, which is where lake effect snow will occur into the weekend.
As the clippers exits this evening, an arctic air mass will invade Ohio. This will combine with northwesterly winds to create a solid lake effect snow setup across northeastern Ohio. The counties of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Portage, and Trumbull are under a Winter Weather Advisory through Saturday night to account for this setup.
Lake-effect snow showers are set to develop tonight and occur on and off through the day Saturday. At times the bands may be poorly organized, which would lead to less impactful snow rates.
However, more organized and heavier bands of lake effect snow will also occur. When they do the road conditions will go downhill due to subfreezing temperatures and high enough snow rates that can overcome and treatment put on the roadways.
Totals by the predawn hours of Sunday will range from 3 to 7 inches in the six counties listed above. As always, there will be varying totals due to the fickle nature of lake effect snow.
Regardless of how much snow is seen in your area, there will likely be travel issues at times through Sunday morning.
Outside of the snow potential it will be a very cold weekend across the state. Temperatures will peak in the middle 20s to lower 30s both Saturday and Sunday despite sunshine being in the mix.
Fortunately the wind won't be too strong this weekend — especially on Sunday. On Saturday it will be just strong enough to keep wind chills near or below 20 degrees statewide all day long. The absolute coldest part of the weekend will be Sunday morning, which is when actual temperatures will be in the teens!
So if you have Christmas shopping to get done this weekend just be prepared to bundle up. If you can stay home it will be a great weekend to just relax and enjoy some Christmas movies and snacks!
We will then warm a bit next week, with highs back the 30s and 40s. Sadly this means a white Christmas is unlikely to happen this year.
