WEST JEFFERSON, Ohio — Columbus police said Monday they're still unsure of the motive of a suspect who opened fire at a West Jefferson Amazon fulfillment facility, which led to the shooting of a Columbus police officer on Sunday.
The police officer was released from the hospital on Sunday night after pursing the suspect, identified as Amazon employee Ali Hamsa Yusuf.
Police revealed some more details about the investigation during a Monday press conference.
Authorities said just after 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, the Madison County Sheriff's Office received 911 calls of shots fire inside the Amazon CMH5 Fulfillment Center, 6400 SR 29 NE, in West Jefferson. Police said during the press conference that officers got to the scene within two minutes.
The 911 calls included a person who said he was almost killed by Yusuf, which the 911 caller revealed was a coworker of his. Police said the caller was a contract security officer through Amazon who was in training. The caller said he noticed Yusuf got up and left, then didn't come back for a while. That's when he heard gunshots.
When officers arrived, Yusuf had fled the scene, which led to a pursuit. Police said the officer was shot while pursuing Yusuf on the west side of town. The officer was then transported to Grant Hospital for his injuries.
The pursuit came to an end near the intersection of Georgesville Road at Clime Road, where a shootout occurred between Madison County Sheriff's Office, CPD, West Jefferson Police Department and Yusuf. The suspect was killed during the shootout, officials said. Yusuf was transported by Franklin Township medics to Doctors West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:57 p.m.
No injuries were reported inside the Amazon facility.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is still looking into the police-involved shooting portion of this incident.
