RAVENNA, Ohio — A Norfolk Southern train derailed Tuesday evening around 7:11 p.m. in Ravenna Township, according to the Portage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management's Facebook page, Portage Prepares.

A spokesperson with Norfolk Southern confirmed 22 cars derailed near Sandy Lake Road. The train was traveling from Bellevue, OH to Conway, PA with 237 cars and four engines in total.

No injuries or spills of hazardous materials were reported. 

The train carried a variety of freight, but the involved cars were predominately autoracks, which carry vehicles, and hoppers carrying rock salt.

"Norfolk Southern crews and our contractors have been on-site clearing the track and cleaning up the site," a spokesperson wrote. "We appreciate the public’s patience near the site during this work. Our Maintenance of Way personnel are currently making repairs to the track."

All train derailments are investigated and reported to the Federal Railroad Administration. The spokesperson said once the report is accepted, further information regarding the cause of the derailment of damages would come from the FRA.
