GRANVILLE — Chris Spielman, an Ohio State legend and former All-Pro for the Detroit Lions and and the Buffalo Bills, knows pain.
But he says in the past few years, he's bought into the healing powers of CBD as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical pain relief.
So much so, he has partnered with friend and 30-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry, Rick Bauer, to create the Spielman line of pain relief products.
“When we were dealing with other challenges in my life and I know that he cares. And the whole family cares about what they put their name on. As I get older, I prefer to be as clean as possible in my lifestyle and how I eat and how I live,” Spielman said.
CBD is derived from the hemp plant, but without the chemicals that make a person high or impair your judgment.
Bauer's daughter Ashley Marienau is a CBD advocate, as well.
The two-time All-American won three national championships in rowing at Ohio State.
Marienau, who was also on the U.S. National Team says an injury prevented her from rowing after college.
“I tried CBD and it helped my overall muscle soreness. And its just incredible to not take Advil all the time. And if you're feeling a little run down, you can just take some CBD, that's what works for me,” Marienau said.
While more research is needed in the wide range of CBD doses and long-term effects, both Spielman and Marienau believe the benefits will outweigh the stigma.
“Pain causes people to be grumpy. Pain causes people to be sad. Pain causes people to be angry. That's because it's all you're dealing with and it's always there. So any time you can take that edge off, it takes off the edge of everything else,” Spielman said.
The Chris Spielman line of CBD products are sold exclusively at CBD Health Collection at 136 North Prospect Street in Granville.
