The National Weather Service in Columbia has now confirmed two tornadoes touched down in South Carolina during Sunday's storms. An EF1 tornado moved through Lexington County Sunday morning, and a short-lived EF0 moved through Barnwell County.
According to the National Weather Service, the first tornado was in the Chapin-Lake Murray area from the Timberlake community northeastward to the Old Lexington Road and Wessinger Road area.
It began at 7:38 a.m. and lasted 10 minutes until 7:48 a.m. It stayed on the ground for 5.8 miles with a width of 125 yards.
The National Weather Service reports mostly tree damage in the path of the tornado near Lake Estate Drive in Chapin and over the Timberlake community. The most concentrated damage was found toward Isle of Pines Road before it moved northeast back over the lake. It dissipated before reaching Indian Fork Road.
There were no reported injuries.
The other tornado was an EF0 in Barnwell County near Sweetwater Country Club. It only lasted two minutes, touching down between Snelling and Barnwell with max winds around 80 mph.
The tornado uprooted at least five large pine trees and snapped several large branches before dissipating.
These are the first tornadoes of the year in South Carolina.
