The detailed display covers more than 1,000 feet of track, on which 300 rail cars and 60 locomotives steam past a mini metropolis. For years, the historic display has been under the care of the Train Masters, a special team of volunteers.

“We are the caretakers of history,” said Ross Wharfield.

Wharfield has been a Train Master for more than a decade. He says the best part of the display is not only the holiday magic but the show of history.

“This is sort of a window into how we as people moved about and transported goods and services in the '20s though the '50s,” said Wharfield. “The buildings, the cars, everything is a period piece.”

This season, the display celebrates 76 years of bringing families together.

“I love when I’m standing here in this control center and three generations or more come up to talk about the display,” said Wharfield. “I sit there and listen to them talk to each other about how they remember seeing this downtown and now here. It is very inspirational.”

In addition to the train display, Holiday Junction also features a Lego metropolis, family friendly activities and visits from Santa. Holiday Junction continues its run at the Cincinnati Museum Center through Jan. 2.
