COLUMBUS, Ohio — Once an arcane sport of woodsmen and loggers, axe throwing is now resonating with people as a fun and unique activity. It's something anyone can try, kids included.

When it comes to hitting the bullseye, the champions and coaches at Dueling Axes are right on target.

“What I tell people is the axe is really sharp,” said Jessica Renner. “Don't throw as hard as you think you need to throw.”

Jessica got her start in 2019 when she began throwing axes at the bullseye just for fun. With each throw, the fun pastime turned into a sharp skill. Jessica's most recent championship win was in September 2021 at a tournament held at Columbus' Dueling Axes.

“Axe throwing is quickly becoming one of the most popular pastime sports in the country,” said Coach Mike Renner. “I'd say 90% of guests that come through the door are throwing an axe for the first time.”

Mike is the general manager of the original Dueling Axes location in downtown Columbus and the newest location in New Albany. The New Albany arena offers 12 lanes of axe throwing fun, lounge spaces, and a full bar.

You don't have to be a champion to pick up an axe and have some fun. Mike says visitors as young as 8 are invited to come test their skills.

“We pride ourselves on giving a fun experience to anyone wanting to try their hand at throwing sharp objects,” said Mike.
