CLEVELAND — Archbishop Hoban's Sam Greer is only a sophomore, and at 6’8" and 300 pounds, he’s usually the biggest guy on the basketball court, and the football field. He’s a two sport star.

What You Need To Know

  • Archbishop Hoban's Sam Greer is one of the top offensive tackles in his class

  • He plays football and basketball

  • Greer has Division 1 offers in football and basketball

“It keeps me in shape,” Greer said. “Agile, all that. It’s a good team sport as well.”

Sam said he didn’t play much as a freshman on the football team, yet his size and athleticism was all Ryan Day needed to offer him a scholarship to play at Ohio state.

“I was surprised when they invited me out for a visit,” Greer said. “And then I got to meet coach Day and then he offered me.”

247Sports lists Sam as the tenth best offensive tackle in his class. Also, he has a number of other Division I offers, including Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee and Florida.

And his physical nature and size has gotten him several Division I offers in basketball as well. He said both sports complement each other.
“Basketball helps with football because I stay light on my feet, be able to move and still make nice little cuts,” Greer said. “Football helps with basketball because I’m just stronger than everybody.”

Steve Helwagen covers Ohio State football for Bucknuts.com. He said college coaches love recruiting two sport athletes.

“Being in sports year round I think is something that helps athletes in terms of their competitive stamina,” Helwagen said. “Playing at a high level.”
Helwagen said Sam’s size is something you can’t coach and that catches a coach’s eye. Couple that with his athleticism, and that really draws attention.

“Footwork is everything in football, particularly with offensive lineman,” Helwagen said. “And they have to be able to shuffle, to backpedal to go side by side and I think that Sam Greer obviously showed that on the basketball court at Hoban.”

Sam said he just wants to play football at the next level. He says it would be hard to juggle playing two Division 1 sports.

“I’d have to drop like 50 pounds for basketball season,” Sam said. “That’s just too much.”
