LOS ANGELES — On Friday, enough Democrats broke with their party and voted to pass the Republican-backed short-term spending bill or continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown through September.
However, the bill does not include any additional funds for natural disasters.
This impacts several states recently hit by natural disasters, such as California.
Although California state legislators have already approved $2.5 billion from the state’s fire relief budget, the rebuilding cost is expected to exceed that.
Chris Hoene, executive director at the California Budget and Policy Center, says Congress will have more opportunities to increase funding for disaster relief in the future.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested nearly $40 billion in federal government funds for fire recovery efforts. T
Legislators are currently reviewing Newsom’s request to see if they will grant it.
