Kevin Coughlin has spent more than a dozen years working as a lawmaker inside the Ohio Statehouse.

Coughlin is now running for congress against Democrat Emilia Sykes, where he’s looking to become an elected official for the first time ever since 2011.

Next week, he will be among the 79 delegates that Ohio is sending to the Republican National Convention. He said there was a vacancy, and the party asked him to step-up as a delegate representing Ohio in Wisconsin.

“It’s one part tradition,” said Kevin Coughlin, R-13th Congressional District candidate. “One part rally, and a good opportunity to introduce the candidates.”

Coughlin has attended the Republican National Convention previously, and also said his wife has served as a delegate. He is a father of two girls and said he is very excited to participate in critical conversations that the party will hold throughout next week. Those conversations could center around the border crisis, inflation, leadership, conservative values, and even working together.

However, during the convention, Americans will understand who will run alongside Trump as his Vice-Presidential candidate. Ohio Senator J.D. Vance is rumored to be on the short list of potential nominees.

Vance is well-liked among many GOP members in Ohio. Coughlin said at the moment no one knows who the running mate will be except for Trump and his team.

“So that’s really the excitement of next week at this point is figuring out who the Vice-Presidential nominee is going to be,” said Coughlin.

Coughlin said he’s very honored to be a part of the bigger event, and it’s not every day a person gets to serve as a delegate for an event as large as the Republican National Convention.

“I’m honored to be a delegate,” Coughlin said. “I’m honored to be able to represent our party, and our Republican voters in Milwaukee and to give voice to the choice that they made in the primaries, and that is to nominate Donald Trump as President, and also really to highlight the issues that are important.”
