New York Attorney General Letitia James' office filed a motion Thursday to fine and hold former President Donald Trump in contempt after he refused to comply with a court order to release documents as part of the agency’s investigation into the Trump Organization’s financial practices.

The attorney general’s office motion imposed a $10,000 fine on Trump for each day he fails to produce documents related to the civil probe.

Thursday’s motion follows Trump’s appeal of the attorney general's initial order on Jan. 18 to compel Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump appear for sworn testimony as part of the ongoing civil investigation.

Trump had until March 31 to produce the required documents after he was granted an extension.

"Trump is in violation of the court’s order to turn these docs over to us by March 31," according to the attorney general’s office.

"Donald J. Trump, Donald Trump, Jr. and Ivanka Trump have been ordered by the court to comply with our lawful investigation into Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization’s financial dealing," James said in February when a state Supreme Court justice ruled the Trumps had to comply with her office’s testimony subpoena and to produce related documents.

The state attorney general’s office has collected significant evidence the Trump organization engaged in fraudulent or misleading financial reports for economic gain, including loans, insurance coverage and tax deductions over multiple years, prompting the civil probe.

"No one will be permitted to stand in the way of the pursuit of justice, no matter how powerful they are," James said. "No one is above the law."
