COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nationwide Children's Hospital and Ohio State University have reached a deal on a west campus site for the hospital's gene therapy manufacturing affiliate.
Andelyn Biosciences Inc. plans a $74 million biotechnology manufacturing facility for genetic material used in research and clinical trials.
University trustees are being asked this week to approve a ground lease for 8 acres at Lane Avenue and Carmack Road. Andelyn would sublet the property from university affiliate SciTech.
The site was identified in Columbus City Council documents for an economic incentive approved in February, but the pediatric hospital said it had not yet secured the land.
Children's created Andelyn, a for-profit affiliate, to at first take over in-house genetic material production inside thehospital's Wexner Research Institute. It plans to build a 85,000-square foot facility, with many multiples of the current capacity, targeted for a 2023 opening.
Andelyn has pledged to create 170 new jobs, according to the proposed incentive, paying a range of $69,000 to $280,000 yearly. Children's has earlier said about 85 hospital staff would transfer to the affiliate and it could grow to 200 employees over time. Profits would go back into research.
The biotech facility fits in with Ohio State's Innovation District planned for what's now prairie and intramural sports fields.
Separately, Children's is teaming up with OSU's Wexner Medical Center on a $100 million proton therapy cancer center for the planned outpatient complex in the district.
District plans also include a high-tech greenhouse, interdisciplinary research laboratory, and energy innovation and tech commercialization center run by with French energy management company Engie, which manages OSU's utility system. Ohio Third Frontier documents indicated a possible larger headquarters for nearby Rev1 Ventures, although those plans are not yet confirmed.
