ORLANDO, Fla. — Leaders in Orlando joined the community in ditching their car keys and picking helmets instead for the 24th Annual Bike to Work Day on Friday.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer called on Central Floridians to try alternate routes to work, and forms of transportation as well, as the annual Bike to Work Day coincided with Florida's bike month.
All skill levels were welcome to the free event, with the focus on healthy, eco-friendly alternative options to travel.
Bike to Work Day helps to showcase changes in infrastructure and improvements that have been made to enhance cyclist and pedestrian safety in the city.
The event also promotes bike-friendly public transit options like train service SunRail and Lynx, which offers fixed bus routes, a commuter service and Vanpool programs. While the event provides e-bikes and helmets to those without, the supplies are limited, so cyclists are encouraged to bring their own.
The 3.5-mile ride began at Luminary Park and ended downtown near South Orange Avenue and East Church Street.
