EMERALD ISLE, N.C. – Beachgoers in Emerald Isle are being urged to stay vigilant after several Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish have washed ashore along the tide line.

The City of Emerald Isle issued a public alert warning residents and visitors about the highly venomous marine creatures, which can still sting even after they have been stranded on the sand.

Despite their jellyfish-like appearance, Portuguese man o’ war pack a painful sting through their long, trailing tentacles. Even when washed up on the shore, their venom remains active and can cause severe pain, skin irritation and, in some cases, allergic reactions.

Officials are urging the public to take the following precautions:

  • Do NOT touch them – even when dead these creatures can still have a painful sting
  • Keep pets away
  • Watch where you step when walking along the shore
  • Be on the lookout when swimming in the water

Authorities are asking the community to share this information with others to ensure a safe beach experience for all. For more updates and information, beachgoers can check the City of Emerald Isle’s website.
