ST. LOUIS — A $115,000 remodel of the MetroBus Stop at 13th Street and Gravois Avenue near Soulard was unveiled Thursday morning by project officials.
This is the seventh bus stop renovation as part of the Transit Stop Transformation Project.
After input from the public and Metro Transit, the bus stop at 13th Street and Gravois has been “transformed into a welcoming place,” said Chuck Stuart, Metro Transit vice president and COO.
“Metro Transit is an integral part of this community, connecting residents in our region to jobs and opportunities.”
Partners of the Transit Stop Transformation Project are Citizens for Modern Transit, AARP in St. Louis, Metro Transit, St. Louis City, St. Louis Relators and Ameren Missouri.
The 13th Street and Gravois Avenue MetroBus Stop now features pedestrian infrastructure, green space, seating, wayfinding art, lighting and a new bus shelter designed with a nod to Soulard.
“These transit projects continue to underscore the fact that transit matters – from the big picture perspective to the individual rider. Transit is personal,” said Kim Cella, executive director of Citizens for Modern Transit.
In collaboration with Design Lab 44, Acernus Architecture planned and designed the new bus stop. Additional contractors and vendors involved were Lake Contracting, St. Clair County Transit District and Stika Brothers Cement Contractor.
“Making public transit accessible and attractive benefits all of us,” Mayor Tishaura Jones said. “It means fewer cars on our roads, which makes our streets safer and less congested while cutting down on harmful emissions.”
Funding came from a national AARP Challenge Grant and support of AARP in St. Louis, St. Louis City, Citizens for Modern Transit and Ameren Missouri.
“It really does take a village … to build a community and our Transit Stop Transformations are no different,” said Sheila Holm, community outreach director for AARP in St. Louis.
Past Transit Stop Transformation Projects include the Maplewood MetroBus Stop and the Emerson Park, Belleville, North Hanley, 5th and Missouri and Fairview Heights transit centers.
