CLEVELAND — The Norwayne High School girls' basketball team is making history this year. Allie DeMassimo is a junior on the team and she said this year is different.
“Our team, we’ve been working really hard for this and it all of our hard work is just paying off,” DeMassimo said.
For any team making the state championship game, it’s a big deal, but for the Bobcats, it means even more. It’s the first time in school history that the girls’ basketball program has made it to the final four and now the state championship title.
Ava Maibach, another member of the team, is excited.
“This is what every team dreams of and hopes for and we’ve worked hard enough to accomplish it,” Maibach said.
The girls are playing for the team, and for the entire community who has supported them.
The girls hope to return home as state champs.
“It would just be awesome. I can just imagine all of our smiles and our excitement, just everything, I just think not only me, but it would mean the world to our coaches and the rest of our team too,” DeMassimo said.
At the very least, they hope their accomplishments inspire young girls in the community.
“I think this year was setting a new standard and for those young girls to look up and be like I can do that too,” Maibach said.
Norwayne takes on Portsmouth on Saturday morning, watch live on Spectrum News 1 or online.
