The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction announced geotechnical work on the Kailua Beach Boat Ramp will take place from March 17 to April 11.
Work will take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for holidays and weekends, weather and tide permitting, according to a news release from the DDC.
Hawaii visitors and residents should expect access to the boat ramp to be restricted for safety reasons. Additionally, parking on the east side of the adjacent parking lot will be limited. DDC encourages people to avoid the area.
The geotechnical work is part of the Kailua Boat Ramp Improvement Project. The consultants, Pacific Geotechnical Engineers and Sea Engineering, will conduct soil boring test sampling. They will drill five soil test borings: two in-water borings at the toe of the existing boat ramp and three on the ramp above the water. Soil boring is an important step in assessing and confirming the site’s geotechnical characteristics, which are needed to design the improved boat ramp, according to DDC.
Constructed in 1962, the ramp has been repaired several times and will require additional repairs because of constant wave action and erosion. It was closed in early Feb. 2021 because of its worsening condition and underwent emergency repairs in the summer of the same year.
The boat ramp is the only man-made watercraft launch facility managed and maintained by the City and County of Honolulu.
