A pair of Western New York elected officials are at odds following President Donald Trump's address to Congress Tuesday night.
New York 26th District Congressman Tim Kennedy, a Democrat, says the president chose division over unity Tuesday night. He says that that president is choosing tax breaks for the rich over lowering the cost of living for the average American.
Kennedy released a statement after Trump delivered his address to a joint session of Congress:
"Once again, when presented with an opportunity to unite the country, President Trump chose division. The American people are demanding solutions to lower the cost of living, make healthcare more affordable, and keep our communities safe. Unfortunately, President Trump and Elon Musk have different priorities: decimating Medicaid, failing to meet our obligations to our veterans, and gutting the federal workforce that our country relies on, all to give yet another tax break to the rich. We are just over a week away from a government shutdown. We must move past extremism and division to deliver the services Western New Yorkers and people across the country need, as we were elected to do.”
Rep. Nick Langworthy (R - NY23) had a differing opinion, saying the American dream is being renewed under Trump. He called the president's speech inspiring, and is looking forward to helping him secure the border and restore common-sense spending.
Langworthy also released a statement, saying:
“Under the Trump Administration, the American Dream is being renewed. I was honored to be seated on the House floor to hear President Trump’s remarks live, and I know America's best days are ahead. The state of the Union is on a path back to strength, and it has only been 44 days.. His speech was inspiring and exactly what the American people needed to hear, highlighting the very best of our country. I was discouraged and appalled by Democrats’ reprehensible conduct - from disrespectfully interrupting the President mid-speech, to intentionally sitting during the announcement of the terrorist behind the Abbey Gate Bombing. Despite what the other side thinks or does, I look forward to continuing to work with the Trump Administration to secure the border, bring investments and manufacturing back to the US, and restore a common-sense approach to spending.”
