A 28-year-old man died after jumping into the ocean at Spitting Caves on Saturday, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner confirmed the man’s death, but declined to provide any other information, as they are still working to contact his family.

Spitting Caves, in the Portlock neighborhood of Hawaii Kai on Oahu, includes a 50-foot cliff above the ocean and a cave that “spits” water out. Many people have died at Spitting Caves over the past two decades.

Honolulu Ocean Safety and the Honolulu Fire Department responded Saturday at 6:11 p.m. after receiving a 911 call for a person who jumped into the ocean at Spitting Caves, but did not resurface, according to news releases from the two agencies.

At 6:22 p.m., the HFD located the unresponsive man in the ocean. Ocean Safety jet ski operators brought him to the Maunalua Boat Ramp.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) onshore. EMS administered advanced life support and transported the patient to an emergency room in critical condition.

A video of the man jumping at Spitting Caves was shared widely on social media
