Sunday was a snow day for many as inches of snow covered the five boroughs overnight. It was a bit slippery on streets and sidewalks, but many New Yorkers were still out and about enjoying the moment, including in Prospect Park.
“This is the only shot we’re gonna get this winter. Right? I got the skis sitting in the basement all year, it’s today or never,” said Jacob Goldstein, a parkgoer who was cross country skiing. He said he dusted off his skis, walked to the park and that he enjoyed his time in the woods in the middle of New York City.
“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love snow,” said Anastasia Wild, who was at the park with her dog and a friend’s dog, and said she hopes the snow lasts.
Even four legged New Yorkers were getting in on the snow fun, including dogs who were playing frisbee and frolicking in the white stuff.
“Dogs are very excited, it’s not that cold,” said Wild. “It’s great.”
The wet and heavy snow was ideal for building snowmen – with no shortage of admirers.
“It’s great that there’s enough snow to finally build a snowman. Cause it’s been many years, and we’ve had some snowfall at least in the city, so it’s nice that kids can build it,” said Ian Klapper, another parkgoer who was taking a picture of a giant snowman someone had built.
Meanwhile for some young New Yorkers, it was all about making snowballs, but only with the right techniques.
“It’s kind of grainy, and hard to shape, but if you get under the first layer then it’s actually pretty easy,” said 12-year-old Joshua Wright. “It’s really fun.”
Wright said he loves the winter and was excited waking up this morning to snow.
“I opened the shade and I saw a lot of snow, and I kinda wanted to sleep in, but my mom got me to go to the snow, and I’m happy she did,” he said.
Others were getting their thrill on the hills in the park.
“I was excited cause I love the snow! It’s really fun to go sledding in the park and stuff,” said 10-year-old Adeline Nusbaum, who was sledding with her mother.
Parkgoers made the best of the snow day, as fans of winter prepare for whatever else Mother Nature has in store.
New York has more snow forecasted to arrive in the city over the coming days, with the potential to disrupt weekday commutes. But at least for one day, New Yorkers were enjoying a snowy Sunday having fun.
