President-elect Donald Trump, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America.” His comment came as he claimed Mexico is taking advantage of the U.S. on immigration and trade.

“We’re gonna be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America  — what a beautiful name,” Trump said.

A short time later, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., posted a clip of Trump’s comments on X along with a promise to introduce legislation for the name change.

“President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start. I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America,” she wrote.

The Gulf of Mexico is bordered by the U.S. as well as the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. It is bounded on the southeast by Cuba.

According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. federal government administers the submerged lands and waters of the Gulf of Mexico's Outer Continental Shelf. The U.S. claims sovereignty over the airpsace, water column and subsoil in the area.

Trump’s comments came at a winding news conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida during which he also said he would revoke President Joe Biden’s ban on new oil and gas drilling of most U.S. coasts, pardon the rioters charged for attacking the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and said he would consider “economic force,” but not military force, to annex and acquire Canada.

Trump also said during Tuesday's news conference that Greenland and the Panama Canal should be part of the U.S

Congress certified Trump’s 2024 win on Monday. His inauguration is set for Jan. 20.
