Emotions ran high at Monday’s city council meeting.

An Akron City Council member called on Mayor Shammas Malik to fire Akron police officer Devon Fields, who shot and killed 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker on Thanksgiving night 2024.

Before talking about Fields, council member Eric Garrett thanked all the brave police offers and said the really appreciates them and added that one or two of them give them a bad name.

“The mayor has the responsibility to keep us all safe. He has that responsibility and he’s failing to do that. He has the power to fire this gentleman,” Garrett said.

Tucker was killed while officer Fields was responding to a call about shots being fired. A gun was found zipped inside his pocket.

Tucker’s mom, Ashley Green, sat quietly in the front row listening throughout the meeting as one resident spoke about the incident.

“APD has taken it upon themselves to be lady justice in all sense: the judge, the jury and the executioner,” said Jessica Riddle, Akron resident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case before it makes its way to Akron Police Department’s internal affairs. It may be several months before that happens. Officer fields is currently on administrative leave per department policy.
