COLUMBUS, Ohio — While Monday’s winter storm is less than ideal for our roadways, it’s a gift from Mother Nature to the kids whose classes were canceled due to dangerous driving conditions.
And a hill at Wyman Woods Park in Columbus is popular on snow days.
“It’s a lot of fun going down this hill, I would recommend it,” Daxton Peters said.
The 11-year-old said he tries to go sledding there with his friends every time the snow accumulates.
“I got no fear,” he said.
But you will not find his dad, Jason, anywhere other than on the level ground at the bottom.
“Let’s just say he’s a little bit too big,” Daxton said. “He’s in his golden years.”
“Too old, too broken, want to be able to walk in the morning,” his dad agreed.
But John Lazar said sometimes you have to crawl.
“Kids and grownups need to get on all fours sometimes,” he said with a laugh, as he helped his 4-year-old son Wild up the hill, slick from footsteps packing down the snow.
The father-son duo joined a father-daughter team, Joe and Lucy McGlone at the top.
At 5 years old, Lucy said she likes that the hill is steep for sledding, but not when she falls off her sled while speeding down it.
“I did hit my head,” she said.
“Yeah, we wiped out earlier,” John said with a laugh.
Passing down some snow day traditions while strengthening the community.
“It’s kind of like (The Andy Griffith Show’s) Mayberry back in the 50s and you know, everybody knows everybody,” Jason Peters said about the families at the sledding hill. “And somebody’s coming, they start calling, ‘Hey, we’re going, we’re going.’ Everybody shows up.”
