CLEVELAND — Gov. Mike DeWine was in Cleveland Friday to learn more about the battle over the location of a future Browns stadium.

What You Need To Know

  • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine met with Cleveland mayor and Browns owners to learn about battle of the location of a future stadium

  • DeWine spent three days in Cleveland visiting the lakefront and downtown

  • DeWine said he wasn't planning on weighing in and is leaving the issue up to the local community

The governor said he isn't weighing in on the options, but he does want to learn more about the arguments each side is making.

DeWine said he's been in Cleveland three times over the past week on what he describes as a fact-finding mission. He met with Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb about plans to keep the Browns in Cleveland and build up the lakefront.

The Haslams said they'll need taxpayers to pick up about half of the $2 billion dollar price tag for a new stadium and entertainment complex in Brook Park. And they have said they promise it will get more use than the current stadium, which hosts a little more than a dozen events a year.

But the city said it would take a $30-million-a-year hit if the stadium moves outside of the city and argues that taxpayers have already supported the infrastructure needed to support a new stadium complex.

DeWine said he also met with the Haslams last week to talk about their proposal and, right now, his role is to listen to both sides.

“We get involved in these things, but ultimately, it’s the local community that makes the decision and decides which way to go," he said. "I want to be better informed. I have found in my experience, in government, I’m better off if I can see things, look at them myself, understand things better. That’s all this was."

The governor said he also visited the lakefront, the riverfront and downtown during his trip.

Mayor Bibb spoke only briefly on their meeting saying, “Really articulating how much work we put into accelerating lakefront development from the $60 million the city received from the federal government and additional $20 million from the state."

Bibb said they hope to receive more funding from the federal government in the next couple weeks.
