Glen Tuomaala is making abstract art out of old pizza boxes to give away to residents moving into Vista Village, which a tiny housing development for people transitioning out of homelessness to live and find a second chance.
Tuomaala shared his idea to donate 41 pieces of art to the housing development with Vista Village’s Executive Director Lexi Rogers. She was impressed.
“I mean, there's 41 units here. He wanted to make 41 separate pieces for each person," she said. "We thought it was really, really special to be able to say that someone from their local surrounding area cares for them and wants them to know that they're welcome here."
As Tuomaala puts some finishing touches on each piece, he's hoping they spread a little kindness to people who need it the most.
"Yeah! Think about it... 'I'm no longer living under a bridge, and now I have a tiny home to live in and someone cares enough to make me an original piece of art', that's the Columbus I want to live in," he said.
But for now, he'll keep doing what he loves, using art to inspire as many people as possible.
"I'm just going to keep making art and giving it away,” he said. “If that can make Columbus better, then I'm doing the right thing."
Vista Village residents are expected to get their art in January when they start moving in.
