CHICAGO — The Ohio State Buckeyes will get a chance to play in a venue they’ve never played in before at Wrigley Field later today. We got a behind the scenes look at what it took to get the locker room and football field set up ahead of the game.
It’s a pretty surreal site to walk out to Wrigley Field for a football game.
“We’re really close here to the first base side of Wrigley Field," said Kevin Ries, the OSU director of football equipment.
And come Saturday afternoon, the Buckeyes will be standing right here on that first base line. But the logistics of playing at a baseball diamond has a few setbacks.
“This is the batting cage for MLB so instead of going all the way up to the locker room at halftime, we’ll set up offense, defense, position groups down here," Ries said.
That’s because there are flights of stairs to get to the locker room.
“This is what we’re trying to avoid for halftime," Ries said of the stairs.
Planning out a locker room in a new space takes a lot of planning and attention to detail, which Kevin Ries the OSU Football director of football equipment is very good at. He thinks of just about everything.
And the Cubs have learned how to handle the changes too, clearing out clubhouse furniture and creating makeshift lockers.
For players like quarterback Will Howard, playing in a historic stadium like Wrigley will be memorable.
“It'll be interesting to play football in there," Howard said. "But I'm excited, man. It's a historic landmark, and in a really cool city. I'm looking forward to it. It'll be a cool opportunity.”
Despite some of these changes, Ries and his team say this visiting locker room is luxury for them.
“This is bigger than most Big Ten locker rooms," he said. "Again, from the theory and the thought that it’s going to be tight, it’s not as tight as what we’re used to.”
And after all the hard work to make it a functional locker room, the equipment team and student managers got to fulfill a dream too and let off a little steam, playing wiffle ball on Wrigley Field.
Hosting this game has been nearly a year-long process for the Buckeyes. Several members of the equipment staff went to Wrigley Field in the spring for a site survey to better understand how to set up the locker room and other amenities for the players.
