CLEVELAND — Cleveland is a city with a large Ukranian community, many of them came here in the last year to escape the dangers of war in their country.

Ukrainians first came to Cleveland in the 1800s, and as of last year, there were more than 20,000 residing in the area, according to Case Western Reserve University and the U.S. Census Bureau.

One Ukrainian woman in Cleveland said she has been coping with the results of this election, and what she thinks will happen to her country once President Donald Trump takes office once again.

"My husband and my family is still in Ukraine, and you know, it’s war — it (continues), it’s not stop and it’s hard," she said.

Tatiana moved from Ukraine with her son to escape the dangers of the war. She left her husband behind as he continues to serve on the front lines.

Tatiana said she is clinging on to hope that one day she can return back home, but she said now with President Donald Trump returning to office, the future remains uncertain.

"Maybe, maybe, we hope when Trump will be president when he gets his power, he can stop this, and he can say something," she said.

Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within the first 24 hours of taking office. Dr. Taras Mahlay with the Cleveland Maidan Association said he’s not sure if Trump will keep that promise.

"It’s tough to tell what someone is going to do. As a American, I care about America, so but I also am concerned about world order, world peace," he said.

But Tatiana’s dream is the same: going back home and reuniting with her husband.

"And I hope that we (can) be together in Ukraine and be happy together and be safe," she said.
