COLUMBUS, Ohio — Hospital stays aren’t easy. That’s why Nationwide Children’s Hospital is continuing its tradition, making this time of year a little brighter for their patients and their families.

What You Need To Know

  • Dozens of butterflies are put out in front of Nationwide Children’s Hospital every year for the "Light up the Lawn, Light up a Life" campaign

  • The display can be seen from the hospital’s tower as patients look out their windows

  • Organizers say a couple hundred people came out to the first lighting this year

It’s the third year of the “Light up the lawn, light up a life” campaign.

More than a hundred of these butterflies every year are put out in front of the hospital for pediatric patients and their families, as well as health care workers. The butterflies light up each time a donation is made to the hospital, creating a unique light show each night.

The display can be seen from the hospital’s tower as patients look out their windows.

“This campaign is an amazing way for us to draw attention to some of the incredible innovative research that we’re doing here at the hospital, some of the great work that we do out in the community,” said Dr. Ray Bignall. “We can’t do this work alone. We need the support of our community to make this happen and to help generate awesome outcomes for our patients and their families.”

The tradition is extra special for Mandy Wilson. She has two kids with a severe blood disorder.

“Oh, we love it,” Wilson said. “So, we are treated on a regular basis on the 11th floor and hematology. And so, we get to see them pop up over the holidays and it is really special to be able to see them.”
