COLUMBUS, Ohio — It started with a pool of more than 100 potential jurors, and while many of them have been sent home, the final jury is still not finalized.
Tuesday afternoon, the judge said there’s 60 potential jurors that are still being questioned.
The attorneys from both sides will need to get that number down to 12 jurors and four alternates before opening statements can begin.
As for the case itself, Coy shot and killed Andre Hill nearly four years ago. At the time, Hill was in his friend’s garage when Coy showed up after responding to a noise complaint. Coy has pleaded not guilty to murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault charges. Case Western Reserve University law professor Kevin McMunigal said jury selection for a murder trial this important is extremely difficult, especially when the attorneys are doing the questioning.
“They're sort of pre-trying their case to the jury (by) using the questions of our selection to sort of, you know, try and start to convince people or, you know, in advance before the jury is seated, which is not such a great thing. I don't think,” said McMunigal.
Wednesday, the jury is expected to be finalized in the morning, and then Wednesday afternoon, the official jury will visit the location of the where the shooting took place in 2020. But with a case like this, the timeline of events could change.
