CINCINNATI, Ohio — From flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, vision screenings and mammograms, the 10th annual Family Health Day was a one-stop shop.
Most services offered were free. The event was a collaboration between Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and First Ladies for Health.
“It’s cold and flu season. It’s RSV season. We just want to make sure our community stays safe,” said Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Community Relations Manager Ebony Washington.
Washington said the day aligns with their mission to improve child health care in every community.
“It is important sometimes for organizations, especially health care organizations, to come right out into the communities where these people live to let them know we’ll be in your parks, your schools and your churches,” she said.
New Prospect Baptist Church was just one of the 10 churches participating as a host site. First lady Regina Jenkins-Lynch said services at each site were tailored to meet the needs of that area.
“We have more people who are without jobs and who are without health care,” Jenkins-Lynch said.
Reflecting over the last decade, Jenkins-Lynch believes the event has played a crucial role in saving many lives.
“Over the last 10 years, we have had a few members that we’ve had to send straight from the health day to the hospital. So we have done great work,” she said.
Each site expected to serve 100 people, with a grand total of 1,000 people by the day’s end. Washington credited that to just how powerful it is to go out into the community and meet people where they are.
“So the reach is great, not just for the church but even for the community coming in as well.”
Organizers said the day couldn’t have been made possible without the support of sponsors, including Kroger, Interact for Health and more.
