U.S. Army Veteran George Washington Whitehead celebrated his 102nd birthday and was surrounded by his friends at Burton Health Care Center, where he stays. Whitehead was also surprised to see a couple of special guests.

His fraternity brothers joined him to honor his extraordinary commitment to the Psi Phi Fraternity Zeta Omega chapter to honor his service during World War II. Whitehead served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 1942 until Dec. 1945 and played a vital role in both Signal and Air Corps.

Earl Lee is a veteran and member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and shared memories with Whitehead being at the fraternity together.

“He’s 102-years old. You don’t you don’t see very many people that are 102-years old. And to have a member like that and fraternity, that’s 82 year, you know, he’s been a member for 82 years and, he’s still going strong,” he said. “That just tells you that, you know, he’s he’s got what it takes, you know, and he’s he’s just someone to emulate.”

Whitehead received a special recognition plaque and a VA challenge coin to honor his contributions and sacrifices, something Damon Scott, the public relations chair of the fraternity, said is well deserved.

“That’s why we’re here today, to honor brother whitehead for his service to the united states army and for his country during World War II,” he said.
