COLUMBUS, Ohio — Crime prevention continues to be a hot topic across Ohio, but new data shows Columbus is seeing a sharp decline in violent crime.

According to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, the number of violence crimes in Cap City during the first half of this year was 41% lower than the first half of 2023, making it the sharpest drop for any major city in the country.

What You Need To Know

  • According to the Major Cities Chiefs Association, crime rates in Columbus are dropping off more than any other major city in the country

  • "Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children" and other anti-violence groups are trying to help bring crime down

  • While the number of violence crimes in Columbus dropped by 41%, Cincinnati and Cleveland only dropped by 8% and 7%, respectively

That’s especially personal to Brenda Johnson. She lost her son James Edward Johnson III to homicide in 2020. He was 29 at the time.

Johnson is now part of the anti-violence group called “Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children.” She believes that group and others are helping bring down crime.

“Without the other organizations and CPD joining us in the efforts, I don’t know if or when it comes down that low,” she said. “It takes a village.”

Meanwhile, Johnson continues searching for answers.

“My son’s case is still unsolved,” she said. “Hopefully, one day somebody will find in their heart to come forward and speak up.”

But until then, she’ll continue sharing his story, hoping to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.

“Put the gun down,” said Johnson. “That’s it. Just put the guns down. They’re not worth it, I tell you.”

While the number of violence crimes in Columbus dropped by 41%, Cincinnati and Cleveland only dropped by 8% and 7%, respectively.
