COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s almost back to school time, which means Home for Families is doing its part to help families in need throughout the school year.

The nonprofit helps families experiencing homelessness or on the verge of it.

Because of Home for Families, Robert Allen has a new lease on life.

Allen now has a place to call home and is training to pursue a career in I.T. and cyber security, but above all, he’s thankful for the stability his children now have, especially during the school year.

“Home For Families allowed them to go to the after-school program,” Allen said. “They’ve never charged us anything. The kids go to many different places… splash parks, the zoo and just all kinds of stuff.”

Executive Director and CEO of Home for Families, Beth Fetzer-Rice, said the nonprofit serves 1,200 families across Columbus last year.

“We work with families who are experiencing really severe housing crisis, and may be just a step away from homelessness,” she said.

They offer several resources and programs to get families back on track.

“Our job, then, is to really stabilize them,” Fetzer-Rice said. “Help them pay rent, stay where they are, so that they can again be safe and secure for their families. Then, we also have quite a bit of programming for families that have already lost control of their housing.”
