CLEVELAND — One piece of garbage at a time, 13-year-old Drevian Arrington and his 16-year-old brother, Andre Willis, are making their community a better place.
They call themselves "The Trash Boys," and they are based out of Garfield Heights. They go around their community, picking up any litter that they see.
“We noticed that it was a lot of trash before,” Arrington said. “So now, since we have been doing it, we’re seeing less now.”
The teens started doing this as a way to keep busy this summer. Beyond picking up trash, they also provide paid services to their neighbors like trash can cleanings and yard pick up.
The teens explained that senior citizens and and people with disabilities make up a large part of their client base.
“I’ve seen people struggling with taking their trashcans to the curb and back,” Arrington said. “We service elderly people and seniors, we helped them take their trashcans to the curb the day before trash day.”
The boys' mother, Jasmine Arrington, said she’s proud of their initiative.
“I feel like what this is really doing, and what it could do for other children, is help them develop a lot of different skills and a value system centered around servicing others, respect and hard work,” the mother said.
The boys said they hope to inspire other young people to make a difference.
“It feels better with a cleaner neighborhood,” Arrington said. “More kids should take responsibly.”
They plan to continue their mission of bettering the community even after summer ends.
