OHIO — Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance has already made a mark here in Ohio. That's expanding now though along with his impact since he’s been selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election.

What You Need To Know

  • More money will likely go toward districts JD Vance represents as there’s greater consideration for legislation that tops the priority list for the Trump-Vance ticket
  • Industries in favor of more restrictive trade policies could benefit from Vance’s nomination
  • Policy impact communities in the Appalachian region may be brought to the forefront

Jared Pincin, associate professor of economics at Cedarville University, said we often see greater consideration of legislation and passage of certain pieces that benefit certain areas once a vice presidential candidate is named.

“You'll see spending go towards those districts," he said. "So there's no reason we shouldn't see that with the Vice President candidate with Ohio. So we should expect to see just more of an impact with legislative decisions where spending can go within Ohio.”

Pincin said money may go to different industries that are top priority for the Trump-Vance ticket. He believes and expects industries that are in favor of more restrictive trade policies could benefit.

“Part of that is to protect domestic industries,” Pincin said. "So i would expect to see that as well. I don't think it's neccesarily a good thing, particularly the restrictive trade parts. Both President Biden and nominee Trump have advocated for stricter tariffs on manufacturing industries. We see a lot of that in Ohio, so you're going to see those effects here within the state.”

As for Vance’s impact beyond legislation, Pincin expects a spotlight to be placed on a number of communities, parts of America he says that are kind of forgotten.

“At the Appalachian region in general, sort of lower-class communities where you saw a big loss of industrialization over the last 30 years. These have just been forgotten by both parties, and this is something that JD Vance made his name for with his book, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' saying that we cannot forget about these communities.”

The expectation now is that with a spotlight on these communities.

“At the best, that means that we're going to start thinking seriously of what policy does within these communities,” Pincin said.
