MEDINA, Ohio — Officers shot and killed a woman at the Medina Sheriff's Office who was armed with a knife and gun Wednesday.
We now know the name of the woman who was shot and killed, and Spectrum News 1 has learned that the Medina County Sheriff is one of two people who fired shots.
Police have shared the identity of the 37-year-old woman who was shot and killed. Her name was Victoria Carter.
Medina Police Chief Edward Kinney said she was known to police for having metal health problems. Police released surveillance video from the Sheriff's Office building of the incident at a press conference.
According to police, Carter was armed with what the Sheriff Terry Grice and his deputy thought was a gun and a knife.
According to BCI, that gun turned out to be a replica, but that was not determined until after BCI arrived on-scene following the shooting. Carter is seen in video footage putting the gun down then picking it back up again.
video shows she charged at officers and they deployed a taser, which had no effect.
She charged again at officers. That’s when she was shot.
Deputies attempted to save her life but were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say this is a tragedy.
"They were understandably distraught that this tragic situation occurred. In a split second, it’s impossible for a police officer to determine if a replica firearm is real or not," Kinney said.
The Medina Police Department and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are now handling the investigation.
