DAYTON, Ohio — The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton is opening up a safe space for anyone from sexual assault victims to families with mental health needs. The services will all be in the same building called the Resiliency Center.
Military leaders cut the ribbon that opened the doors to what used to be an old hospital branch. It’s now a place Community Readiness Consultant Shonte Gonzalez will be using for families who come to her.
“I help about 1,200 people a year transition out of the military,” said Gonzalez.
It’s her job to help find resources that can help, and now it’s all in the same building.
“This being able to be a one stop shop instead of saying go to this area or this area, this is very helpful for people to know the one area and not have to explain because the base can be convoluted, very hard to find people on the base,” said Gonzalez.
So far there’s space for about eight agencies in the building that Colonel Travis Pond said will make a big impact.
“Anything from family counseling to dealing with, you know, domestic abuse. Our sapper office is in there, so sexual assault, you know, those are on the negative side. On the positive side, it’s managing money, budgets and newlyweds,” said Pond.
It’s called the Resiliency Center, designed to do just that for military members at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, but you don’t have to be in the military to use the services.
“Taking care of our people is, you know, the number one thing. The people get the mission done. Without the people, you can’t execute the mission. So when they’re in need, you know, a parent who has a child who has needs, they’re not going to be able to focus on work. So you’ve got to be able to take care of those things, address the needs so that they can be at their best to perform,” said Pond.
