HONOLULU — The new school year is just around the corner and there are many students in need of basic school supplies. Here are just a few events gathering supplies for students in their respective communities.
• School Supply Donation Drive for Waikiki students at two locations: Ala Wai Elementary School, 503 Kamoku St., Honolulu near the cafeteria, and President Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, 324 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu, near the entrance to the library | 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 11
Collecting essential school supplies: backpack/school bag, No. 2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, erasers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, dry erase markers, permanent markers, highlighters, composition books, folder paper, folders/portfolios, three-ring binders, zipper pencil/supply pouch for three-ring binders, pencil boxes, glue, scissors, rulers, watercolors, wired headphones, tissue boxes, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and slippers (elementary to high school).
• 4th Annual Castle Complex School Supply Drive at Windward Mall Center Court, 46-056 Kamehameha Hwy., Kaneohe | 10 a.m.-9 p.m. July 13 and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. July 14
Collecting monetary donations and essential school supplies: backpacks/school bags, No. 2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, pens, erasers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, dry erase markers, permanent markers, highlighters, composition books, folder paper, folders/portfolios, three-ring binders, zipper pencil/supply pouch for three-ring binders, pencil boxes, glue, scissors, ruler, watercolors, wired headphones, tissue boxes, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes and slippers (elementary to high school).
Volunteers will be onsite near the food court to accept donations. The Castle Complex school district includes Castle High School and its feeder schools, a total of 10 schools.
• Mahalo I Kau Kumu Gift Fair with Island Craft Fairs at Ka Makana Aliʻi, 91-5431 Kapolei Pkwy., Kapolei | 11 a.m.-5 p.m. July 13
Give back to Hawaii’s educators by helping to provide supplies to students who come without. Browse through the merchandise from local businesses; all proceeds from this event will go toward purchasing more schools supplies. Drop off donations at the main stage.
Collecting pencils, erasers, glue sticks, tape/tape dispensers, Clorox wipes, art supplies, folders, Expo markers, notebooks, crayons, printer paper, sheet protectors, binders, Sharpies, colored pencils, construction paper, paper towels, tissue paper, storage containers, hand sanitizer, backpacks, board games, slippers.
• Drive-Thru Donate & Shred at Koko Marina Center, 7192 Kalanianaole Hwy., Honolulu | 8-11 a.m. July 27
ACCESS Shredding and the Hawaii Kai Lions Club sponsors this school supply drive in the parking lot between Texaco and First Hawaiian Bank. Donate school supplies and shred up to two boxes of old documents for free. Call 808-295-7197 for details.
• Fundraiser for Keiki @ Kaala Elementary School, 130 California Ave., Wahiawa | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 27
Aloha State Outreach is hosting this fundraiser to collect 1,000 backpacks for keiki in the Wahiawa community that will also include haircuts for keiki, a Keiki Kokua Closet, outreach booths for public benefit sign-ups, food, music and hula performances.
• Islandwide Backpack Drive at Hawaii Island police stations | Now through July 19
The community is invited to drop off new and unfilled backpacks at any police station for island keiki in need. Backpacks are the most requested non-food item by charities, which will be distributed to children at women’s shelters, homeless shelters and transitional housing facilities around the island.
