CLEVELAND —  Cleveland police officer was shot and killed earlier Thursday morning.

The Cleveland Police Department has identified him as 27-year-old Jamieson Ritter.

Officers were responding to a call of a male wanted on a felony warrant on the 1500 block of East 80 Street in Cleveland.

The suspect was attempting to get away on a bicycle when officers approached him. The suspect then produced a firearm and shot several rounds before hitting one of the officers. The officer was taken to University Hospitals where he was later pronounced dead.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Delawnte Hardy. He’s been charged with aggravated murder.

Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones represents Ward 7 where the shooting took place.

“Other people are getting together, having celebrations, enjoying one another, our men and women show up and serve us,” Howse-Jones said.

Heather Neal is a member of the police wives of Ohio. She was placing ribbons at officer ritter’s district. She said this is the third time she’s had to honor a fallen officer on a holiday, including New Year's and Mother’s Day.

 “This is not what i was expecting to be doing when I woke up this morning,” Neal said.

She said she wants to let family members of officers know that they’re not alone.

“It’s part of the family so blood or blue, we love you, so thank you,” she said.

Ritter was originally from Webster, N.Y. where he attended McQuaid Jesuit High School. He went onto graduate from Syracuse University in 2019. He was also a member of the Ohio National Guard.

Ritter had been on the force for four years. His assigned vehicle now sits outside his district.
