COLUMBUS, Ohio — Summer camps are popular this time of year, and there’s one in Ohio giving high schoolers hands-on experience you don’t typically see at a summer camp, and it’s all paving the way for future health care professionals.

What You Need To Know

  • Thirty-four high school students participate in the Ohio State's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Summer Camp

  • The camp is hands on, as students learn about the whole gambit of health care from respiratory therapy to radiologic sciences and more

  • The camp was hosted at Ohio State

Ohio State’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences Summer Camp trains high school students.

Each station is interactive, as they learn about the whole gambit of health care from respiratory therapy to radiologic sciences and more.

Prahalyaraksha Sitaram is a rising sophomore participating in the summer camp.

“I didn’t know that respiratory therapy was a career,” Sitaram said. “I didn’t know that ultrasound was a career like you could do these things as careers. That’s so inspiring to me because it’s just like you’re either a doctor or a surgeon, like that’s all I knew about medicine.”

Eva George helps teach the campers. She said piquing their interest now is key with Intel moving in.

“With such an influx of people into the Columbus area, you’re going to have more and more patients and you’re going to have more and more need for people to help those patients like that,” said George.

If you ask Sitaram, she always wanted to go into health care, but now her heart is set.

“To be a surgeon, a cardiovascular surgeon,” Sitaram said. “It’s either that or become a biomedical researcher.”

She’s excited for that day to eventually arrive.

“I think it’s just a mindset,” Sitaram said. “I think once I get there, then I’ll know like this is where I belong.”

Thirty-four high school students participated in the summer camp, and they plan to host the camp again next year.
