What You Need To Know

  • Willie Mays made the famous catch in the 1954 World Series defeating the previously called Cleveland Indians

  • Mays won the MVP award for the 1954 season and was one of the top home run hitters of all time

  • At the Baseball Heritage Museum in Cleveland, they have a home run ball that was hit by Babe Ruth with Willie Mays' signature on it

One of his most legendary moments was when he made “The Catch” while playing for the National League champion New York Giants against the then Indians in the 1954 World Series. It was in Game 1 of the Series where Mays made an over-the-shoulder catch that would go down in baseball history.

A docent at the Baseball Heritage Museum at Cleveland’s Historic League Park said the Indians went into the World Series thinking there was no way they would be stopped with the record of wins they had for that year. But it was in the eighth inning when the game was tied 2-2 and Vic Wertz came up to bat, hit a deep fly ball to center field and Mays made an older-the-shoulder no look catch.

“But he not only makes the catch to stop, prevent Vic Wertz from getting on base, he whirls around and with two base runners on base he throws the ball in, neither base runner can advance or score that inning ends up tied 2-2, they go into extra innings and they lose to the Giants in extra innings and they go down 1-nothing and then get swept by the Giants that promptly first game was kind of the foretelling of what was gonna happen and it probably took the heart out of the Cleveland Indians,” said Todd Troyer, Docent at the Baseball Heritage Museum.

The first game of the 1954 World Series all came down to “The Catch." Mays won the MVP award for the 1954 season and was one of the top home run hitters of all time. At the museum in Cleveland, they have a home run ball that was hit by Babe Ruth with Willie Mays' signature on it.
