The special election is to fill the vacant seat in the sixth district after former Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, resigned from office in January to serve as president of Youngstown State University.

The district stretches from Mahoning County down to Washington County in the eastern part of the state.

Current Republican Ohio Sen. Michael Rulli is running for the position along with Democrat Michael Kripchak and Independent Christopher Lafont.

Whichever candidate wins the special election will serve out the remainder of Johnson’s term. The candidates have a chance to be elected to a full two-year term in Congress in the November general election.
