  • Several companies located in northeast Ohio moved up in the ranking

Twenty-four companies based in Ohio made the Fortune 500 list this year. While Ohio has the same number of companies listed, several have moved up in the ranking. The majority of the movement took place in northeast Ohio.

RPM, based in Medina, made the list this year, reporting $7.3 billion in revenue. In 2023, they were 526 on the Forbes 1000, but this year, they took 492nd on the Forbes 500 list. FirstEnergy in northeastern Ohio also jumped. They moved up 13 spots from last year, generating $12.5 billion in revenue. The J.M. Smucker Company landed themselves as No. 446 on the list, moving up 19 places and making $8.5 billion in revenue.

This is no surprise after they acquired Hostess Brands Inc. toward the end of 2023. One business professor from Case Western Reserve University said that the range of businesses offered in Ohio is what makes it special.

“I think what it shows for our state is both the diversity of the types of companies,” said Michael Goldberg, who serves as a business professor in the Case Western School of Management. “Everything from Procter & Gamble, down in Cincinnati, to Progressive Insurance up here in Cleveland. You know, many times we will say in the state or in our region that we want to have strong large Fortune 500 companies because of the number of folks that they employ and the impact that they have on our economy.”

Cardinal Health in central Ohio and Marathon Petroleum in Findlay kept their top 20 spots. They ranked No. 14 and No. 16 respectively. These companies around the state generate billions for the economy every year.
